For route developers

TABVAR reimburses hardware costs for new routes and retrofits, runs a yearly bulk hardware order, and keeps hardware and tools in Canmore and Calgary for retrofitters to use.

What TABVAR funds

Funding follows the current TABVAR Funding Guidelines. The short version:

Priority 1Retrofits

No cap

Replacing old or damaged hardware is TABVAR's first priority. Anyone who can retrofit safely can claim, and claims are paid at 125%, with the extra 25% as bulk-order credit.

Priority 2New routes

Up to $2,250

Per developer, per year: up to $1,500 with expansion bolts or $2,250 with glue-ins. Routes with glue-ins are paid at 125%. New route funding is for accredited TABVAR members.

Priority 3Bolted descents

New independent rappel routes are funded after retrofits and new climbing routes.

Rates, eligibility, standards and how to claim

Borrowing hardware and tools

TABVAR keeps two hardware stashes, in Canmore and Calgary, where you can pick up what a retrofit needs. Get in touch ahead of time so it's ready when you need it.

  • The hardware for the job
  • Tools: rotary hammers, drill bits, bolt extractors and more
  • Prefer your own hardware? Claim it back afterwards. It has to meet the same standards.

Ask for hardwareinfo@tabvar.org, or ask in the TABVAR Facebook group.

Issue tracker

Hardware problems reported by climbers are listed by crag in the TABVAR app. Route builders can claim an issue, fix it, and mark it complete so everyone knows it's done.
